The following are the notes (and their corresponding page numbers) from my reading of Ego Is The Enemy by Ryan Holiday in June 2019.

21 – Being able to evaluate one’s own ability is an important skill.  Improvement is impossible without it.  I think of those Idol Auditioners who think they are wonderful, but are awful, then get mad when they are told they suck.
21 – Detach.  Practice seeing yourself from a distance
24 – Talk is easy.  It’s a temptation for everyone to replace action with talk and hype
26 – Silence is strength and the respite of the confident and strong.
26 – Talking and doing fight for the same resources.  Talking about something makes us feel we’ve done more about it than we really have.
31 – “To Be” or “To Do”, which way will you go?
32 – Having authority isn’t being in authority.  Impressing people is utterly different from being truly impressive
33 – “A man is worked upon by what he works on.” Fredrick Douglas
41 – A real student is also his own teacher and critic
42 – With our tech there is no excuse not to get educated and to ever stop that education.
43 – When the student is ready, the teacher appears.
48 – Passion masks weakness.  It’s impetuousness and franticness is a poor substitute for discipline, mastery, strength & purpose.
49 – Outlines how not to be passionate
.56 – Greatness comes from humble beginnings and grunt work.  You’ll be the least important person in the room until you change that with results.
62 – Relax.  You can’t lose your temper as a refuge to despair.
63 – It doesn’t degrade you when people treat you poorly, it degrades them.
76 – Vain men never hear anything but praise.
77 – Prepare for pride and kill it early.  Guard against self-confidence and self-obsession.
78 – Just because you are quiet does not mean you are without pride.  You can quietly think you’re better than everyone else.
78 – Don’t boast.  There’s nothin in it for you.
80 – You can’t build a reputation on what you are “going” to do.
81 – Story of Bill Clinton building his network before he needed it.
82 – Materiam super abat opus = The Workmanship was better than the material.
104 – If you’re not still learning you’re already dying. Fear keeps us from learning.  We stay in a comfort zone that ensure we never feel stupid.  Like sirens, ego signs a soothing, validating song.
105 – How do you get out of the comfort zone?
112 – Keep your identity small.
117 – Don’t try to be better than others.  Be what you are and try the best you can be at it.
118 – Life requires tradeoffs.
130 – Managing yourself – transition to leadership.
131 – Responsibility requires a readjustment, then increased clarity and purpose.
134 – Ego needs honors – confident is able to wait and focus on the task at hand regardless of external recognition.
139 – Sympatheia – connectedness to something bigger.
141 – Creativity is a matter of receptiveness and recognition and can’t happen if you’re convinced the world revolves around you.
145 – Example of Sobriety – Merkel doesn’t react to Putin’s big dogs, making Putin look insecure for trying to intimidate her.
169 – Failure – what matters is that we can weather anything that gets thrown at us.
176 – There will be times when we do everything right and we still fail.  Sometimes things are just out of our control.
178 – We should be more concerned with doing our best work than with the outcomes of that work.
184 – Significatn life changes can come from moments when we are demolished.  They can become catalysts for the change we’ve feared to make.
191 – Ego kills what we love, and comes close to killing ourselves as well.
192 – Most trouble is temporary.  Recovery isn’t grand, it’s one step in front of another.
194 -0 the only real failure is abandoning your principles.  If your reputation can’t withstand a few blows, it wasn’t worth anything in the first place.
197 – Anyone can win, but not everyone is the best possible version of themselves.
199 – It’s not about what you can get away with, it’s about what you should and shouldn’t do.
201 – Discussion of the Streisand Effect.  (When trying to hide something makes it into a bigger deal than it was in the first place.)
204 – Take inventory of your hatred for someone.  Has it ever helped you accomplish anything?
